The Bard of Ballyfiddle

Written by C. G. Miller

The Sheldon R. Serious School is in trouble! Principal Farley has just implemented the “Serious Plan for Serious Education,” which features a no-joy policy, and most devastatingly, the elimination of music… which has been proven to cause joy!

When a strange Bard and a Mysterious Symphony of Sound show up, the children discover the magical world of Ballyfiddle, teaching them how to listen to their hearts, and helping them devise a clever plan for restoring joy to their school.

The Mission of the Children's Theatre Company of South Dakota is to give children the opportunity to work with professional theatre artists in a positive and rewarding experience. We are an outreach of the Black Hills Playhouse offering a dynamic theatre experience, allowing young people the opportunity to perform with professional theatre artists in a full-scale musical production. Using original productions the company incorporates positive themes stressing the importance of individuality, community and the environment.

Arts education has been proven to develop children's creativity and problem solving skills. The CTCSD art programs and services are designed to inform and educate people about the value of the arts, individuality, community and the environment. The arts can inspire creativity, celebrate traditions, help reconcile differences, provide recreation, and contribute to the economic and social development of whole communities. The experience will give students the opportunity to learn better concentration, coordination and communication skills, as well as greater self-confidence and poise.

The parent company of the CTCSD, the Black Hills Playhouse Inc., is one of the oldest, continually operated summer theatre companies in America, founded in 1946 by Dr. Warren M. Lee. The Black Hills Playhouse has a reputation for excellence throughout the state of South Dakota and the country. The Children's Theatre Company of South Dakota is a natural progression of the Playhouse's commitment to year round professional opportunities.

The Children's Theatre Company of South Dakota provides a weeklong residency that will culminate in a musical production using up to fifty local children with suitable parts designed for every age, skill and experience level. The production experience will include five days of intensive rehearsals in which the lines, staging, songs and dances will be learned. In addition to the more challenging roles, older students will serve as assistant directors and learn how to operate sound and lighting equipment. Two actor/directors from the Children's Theatre Company of South Dakota will play major roles in each production.

It is our goal to simply teach and delight children, taking them to that wonderful place where magic, imagination, and reality come together.
