The tale begins
in a Western state in the 1930s with the hometown return of Lizzie
Curry, well down the road to spinsterhood despite the best efforts
of her father and brothers to play matchmaker. File, the sheriff,
is the logical candidate, but ever since his wife ran off on him, he
has retreated behind a façade of self-sufficiency. All this happens
as the area is suffering under an almost unbearable drought. Just as
it seems temperatures couldn't get any hotter, Starbuck, con man and
rainmaker, blows into town, promising to produce a downpour for
$100. Who will be Lizzie’s match and when will the drought end?
